Have to vs. Get to

At the beginning of every year, we get important pieces of paper in the mail stating how much money we made and paid in taxes. We have to file our taxes and pay if we owe.  Some things we have to do and some things we get to do.

It's more than words, but an attitude.  When we 'have to' do something, it is usually an obligation and not something we want to do. On the other hand, when we 'get to' do something, we look forward to it and it is exciting - like 'getting to' go on vacation. We have to go to work, but we get to go on vacation.  It is about attitude.

With adoption, people may say, 'We can't have a baby, so we have to adopt.'  To me, we get to adopt.  If every child is a gift, then so is our adopted child.  If we have to adopt, then it can come across as second-best.

I am excited about adopting because it is how God is giving us a family.  So even though we may not have the pregnancy experience, we are as excited about adoption as an expecting couple and I hope that everybody will feel the same way.  Thank you to everybody who has shared in this excitement with us.

Adoption Myths and Facts

So as we wait…we thought we would share some adoption myths and facts. 1.       Myth : Adoption is second-best. Fact : Adoption may be another way, but it is never second-best.   2.       Myth : Birthparents can show up at any time to “reclaim” their child. Fact : Once an adoption is finalized, it is permanent, and the adoptive parents are legally recognized as the child’s parents.   3.      Myth : Birthparents are irresponsible and don’t care about their child. Fact : Birthparents want the best for their child. They make an adoption plan because they knew they are not able to take care of the child.   4.       Myth : Adoptive parents don’t love their child as much as parents in families formed through biology. Fact : The love is the same, regardless of the family is formed.   5.      Myth :   Infants available for adoptio...

Our Journey Begins

So as some of you know and others of you don't know, Josh and I are starting the adoption process. We decided to start this blog so that our friends and family could keep up with us throughout the journey. Our prayer as we go through this journey is that first and foremost we see God working more and more each day and that the people in our lives see God. To catch everyone up, this decision did not come instantly nor did it come without some struggle and pain. We have been trying to have a family for five years now. We thought that we would have a family as soon as Josh graduated from seminary and then after we had a few biological children we would adopt a child. But little did we know those were our plans not God's plan. Through the past five years we have struggled, prayed, cried, tried some fertility treatments, and in the end no baby Hornbaker. Over the past year, through much prayer the Lord has guided us toward adoption. That in of itself was quite a process. One minute...

It may be a little crazy!

Just One! Thats all it takes to be apart of something bigger! Obviously you have learned from reading this blog that we care about the orphans in the world and our prayer is that other people will do the same. But sometimes in life it is so difficult to think that you could help or make a difference. But really you can. Do you drink a soda, tea, or coffee that cost $1? Then you could help. My husband and I started thinking and realizing that first of all people want to help but times are tough and it is difficult to help out others sometimes ecspecially in the economy we live in. Then we also thought that people know people and sometimes a ton of people. Just think about how many people you have on your facebook or that you work with. So we are trying something that is a little crazy but just might work. We are asking our friends to sacrifice one drink and send us that one dollar and then to ask their friends. The hardest part will be mailing the dollar or taking the time to do the...
